(Free!) Itty Bitty Baby Dress Pattern

Here's one of the things I've been working on for the last couple of weeks -- a pattern for y'all. It was a baby dress I made up last summer (and consequently inspired my first post here).

Here is the most recent version:

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE PATTERN
(NOTE: THIS FILE IS FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY!)

(Note: If you would like to link to this pattern or "borrow" these pictures, please ask permissino first and make sure to kindly give credit to the source. Thank you!)

Looking for the toddler version of this pattern? Click here.

This dress is made with two fabrics, one for the outside and one for the lining. I also made my own bias tape out of the pinky-peach color, but it's alot easier to just use store-bought bias tape and piping (which looks really nice around the waist).

The dress ties at the shoulders and is easiest to get on over the legs (as opposed to over the head). No zippers or buttonholes, so it's ridiculously easy and fast to make.

One thing I want to stress about this pattern is that it really is VERY SMALL. Like so small it would probably sell as a preemie dress at a store, but as many of you know, often newborn babies are really really small and nothing fits them for that first month. So I was trying to make a pattern that would fit right from birth. Additionally, since they grow so fast in the beginning, it won't fit for a terribly long time. The first one I made (for friend Carrie's baby Avery) only fit for a few weeks.

So if you're thinking you want to make this for a bigger baby I'd go ahead and just enlarge it on a copier. There's a ton of give size-wise in the skirt though, so you could probably even get away with keeping the skirt the same size and just enlarging the bodice for a larger baby if you want. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who tries this.

Actually I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who makes the dress. Happy Sewing!

: : Updated : :

After reading this depressing post over at Wee Wonderfuls, it pains me to have to mention that this pattern is for personal use only, i.e. you may not sell this pattern or any dresses (even variations) made using this pattern. Thanks!

yay for free patternage! Tell you what...if you make me an adult-sized version of that dress (preferably in the white fabric with the blue roses), I'll just knit whatever the heck you are trying to make in the round. Do we have a deal?

Kelley said...

So cute! I always love your fabric choices. :-)

that is sooo precious! And thanks for the pattern! SO CUTE! I love how yours turned out.

Yay for knitting in the round! I knit for such a long time on straights before attempting DP's. I remember my anxiety but you've got a great go-to with your sister.

That dress is SO cute, now if I can get over my fear of sewing like you got over yours of DP's I'd give it a try ;-)

Thank you for the making the pattern available to all of us. It is so cute. This would make a cute summer dress for my little girl.

Very cute dress, I love the fabric. I can't wait to see what else you are making.

Should any of my pregnant friends or relatives (of which there are suprisingly many) announce the expectation of girls, I will be making (or trying to make) this dress. I have yet to sew clothes, and I think this might be a good thing to try. Very nice, thank you for sharing the pattern.

Autum said...

Thanks so much for the pattern! I made one today for my first granddaughter (she's due any day now). I haven't taken a picture yet, but I'll send you a link when I do.

Thanks so much for making this pattern available, it is adorable! I have a friend who is pregnant for twin girls due in October. This will be the perfect gift : )

Oh wow...I came from a link in Creative Daisy's post today...and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress! I, my sister, my sister in law, and ALL of my friends are currently pregnant. Most of us don't know if we're having boys or girls, but I can tell you - the baby girls of only my best friends will be receiving this dress!!! You're genius. I LOVE the ties at the top! THANK YOU!!! It's like Christmas!

myrnie_twin said...

I'm with Aunt LoLo on this one (literally- I'm her sister :o) This is an adorable dress! I've tried to make a few pieces of clothing for my 2-year-old daughter, but if this next one is a girl this will be first on my list!

Very cute. Thanks for sharing. I just may need to enlarge for my daughter. Although it's been a while since I've sewn anything.

Thank you for sharing this pattern. I'll be using it to make clothing for charity.

Thanks so much for the adorable pattern. I'm making this dress for my baby girl arriving in August and one for her older sister (2 in July.) I'm still working out enlarging it for my toddler (it currently drowns her a bit.) I'll let you know how that goes.

anna w said...

Ooo! Thanks for the pattern! I've been mulling over how to make a dress for the wee one, but the only thing I had decided was to do ties on the shoulders (like your dress!). This will help so much with my summer sewing. Also, I looooove the material you chose. So sweet.

Adorable tiny dress!

I made a purse out of the same fabric. Isn't it wonderful!!

Maggie said...

Love that adorable pattern. Hope I can adjust it to fit a 2.5 year old!

Andrea said...

Thanks for the pattern. Can you tell me what fabric this is? I'm dying to get my hands on some.

Rae said...

Thanks for all your kind words! The fabric was from JoAnn's but I'm not sure if they still have it. Last time I was there they had the whole line on sale but they were out of this print left. Maybe it's still around in some stores, but I'd hurry if you want to find it.

Jessica said...

I love the dress and the pattern! I can't wait to find out whether my baby is a boy or girl...even if it's a boy I'll probably still enlarge the pattern and make it for my little niece.

Thanks!

Found you on Sew Mama Sew, thanks for sharing this pattern. I don't have a little girl...or a little boy yet, but we'll see if I miss my next period! LOL
BTW, I'm having a contest that ends today, so stop by and make a comment!

Amber Passey said...

Here's another comment. I finished the dress! I'm so excited with how it turned out. It's just darling. Thank you again so much for sharing this pattern.

Doesn't look lke anyone else is having trouble, so I'm very confused. At any rate, I am dying to make one of these for my soon-to-be baby girl. Any chance you could email me the pdf? Much thanks!

Wowww, wowwww, wowwww...
This pattern is really amazingly easy and the pity is that my baby girl is already 17 months old!, lol... I really like it and I find it sooooo easy to follow! It is so complete! I am so happy I have found your blog and will make it one of my favorites to come and check weekly!
HUgs and thanks!

My youngest sister is expecting a baby girl any day now, and when her aunts-in-law and I were planning her baby shower, she said that she wished they made dinosaur dresses for girls, since she is so not a pink-and-frilly person.

I came across your Itty Bitty pattern and thought, "Hey, I can do that!" So I found some dinosaur fabric, and now my soon-to-be-born niece has her very own dinosaur dress!

Thanks for sharing your pattern!

Unfortunately, you can't legally restrict whether or not people make these to sell. They just can't sell the pattern itself. It's a sad truth (I design patterns myself), but once it is out there, it's out there! Thanks for sharing.

Mojavi said...

thanks so much for this pattern. WHat a cute dress! I will be making it for my baby due in Oct and my daughter 2 yrs...

Heffalump said...

I just made one of these for my 3 month old daughter. Its not nearly as cute as yours, but since its my first real attempt at sewing clothing I am pretty happy with it.
I posted a pic of it on my blog, but didn't know how to put one on the flickr pool.

Jen and Ethan said...

Same as heffalump, I just started sewing last week and completed the dress today. Thank you so much for the pattern, it has inspired me! Now let's hope the bulge in my belly is a girl, or Junior will be wearing a lot of cute dresses the first few weeks of his life

I am on bedrest....expecting a preemie girl in the next couple months. (My son was 3 pounds!) Anyway, I've made 4 of these dresses in the past week! Each one turns out better than the last. I use the lining fabric to make the waist band and at the bottom of the skirt. If anyone knows how to make the pattern larger (like for 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 etc. I'd love to know.) I'm not sure how much to increase the top and skirt by for each size. Thanks so much! http://mysite.verizon.net/resqunpm/thenilsenfour/

I just want to say thank you for the fun pattern. I am currently living in Holland and wasn't able to bring my sewing machine so I have missed sewing very much. I thought I'd give this little dress a try without a machine. I had lots of fun making it and it was so simple. There's a picture of the dress here:

Thank you again. I will for sure try another one of these once I find a good fabric store here!
